Summary

Adult protection in BC involves different pieces of legislation including the Adult Guardianship Act.

Regional Health Authorities, Providence Health Care, and CLBC are Designated Agencies where all reported cases of vulnerable adult abuse, neglect, and self-neglect must be investigated.

Designated Responders investigate all reports of suspected abuse, neglect, and self-neglect if there is a reason to believe that the adult is unable to seek support and assistance.

Adults are presumed capable until otherwise demonstrated.

Intervention is guided by following the principles:

  • Adults are entitled to live in the manner they choose as long as there is no harm to others and they are capable.
  • Provide the least intrusive and most effective support.
  • Use court as a last result.

Consult and collaborate.

Consider risk factors and dynamics of abuse in an investigation.
